The Traditional Blessingway Ceremony is an ancient Navajo Ritual to celebrate a woman’s transition into motherhood, and the passing of motherhood from one generation to the next. Grandmother, to mother to daughter. The circle of life.
Celebrating Pregnancy, Birth and Motherhood, this class focuses on the traditional Blessingway Ceremony and the herbs, the history and the purpose of the ceremony. I will pass on that which I have been honored to learn from Navaho and Arapaho birth keepers about the Blessingway.
You will learn about the sacred plants that are used in this ceremony, how to prepare them and use them during the ceremony and what the purpose for each herb within the ceremony represents. You will learn how to facilitate/lead a Blessingway (or hold your own).
This beautiful ritual has in more recent times been adapted into our birthing culture as an alternative to Baby Showers. The ‘modern’ Blessingway shifts the focus from gift giving and games to a balanced mix that includes gift giving with the preparation for transition to motherhood. We will discuss the many ways this ceremony can be updated for modern times while still retaining it’s sacred nature.
